Golden Goggles are tonight in New York
The 2008 Golden Goggle Awards take place tonight at the New York Hilton, beginning 7 p.m. ET. Each year, the USA Swimming Foundation hosts the event to celebrate the competitive achievements in our sport.

Marshall, Bal finish second and third in World Cup
The FINA Swimming World Cup 2008 drew to a close this past weekend in Berlin, with Americans Peter Marshall (pictured left) and Randall Bal (pictured below, right) finishing second and third in the men’s overall series rankings. The two swimmers took home $50,000 and $30,000, respectively, for their efforts in the series this year.

Descenza perfect at Minnesota Grand Prix
Mary Descenza swam a perfect six for six gold medals at the Minnesota Grand Prix. The American record-holder is now in the top position on the USA Swimming Grand Prix Series leaderboard with 30 points. A $20,000 purse will be awarded to the swimmer with the most points at the conclusion of the six-stop series.

Descenza keeps winning streak alive
Mary Descenza (Naperville, Ill.) doubled her gold-medal count on the second day of competition at the Minnesota Grand Prix at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Descenza’s gold-medal total now stands at four.

Descenza earns double gold on opening night of Grand Prix
The 2008 Minnesota Grand Prix kicked off today at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. National Teamer and American record-holder Mary Descenza (Naperville, Ill.) earned double gold on the opening night in the 200y freestyle and 100y butterfly, while Olympian Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) took home a gold and silver medal.

Swensen, who is also an assistant coach for the YMCA of North Shore in Beverly, Mass., offers some advice for dryland exercises for each of the different strokes.

Jones named finalist for NDPA's highest honor
Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones is the first swimmer to be a finalist for the National Drowning Prevention Alliance’s most prestigious honor, the Lighthouse Award. Prior award winners included congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and political activist Nancy Baker.

USA Swimming names Scholastic All-America Team
USA Swimming has announced the selection of its Scholastic All-America Team for 2007-08. Nine-hundred and seventy-four athletes made the team this year, including 600 women and 374 men. Sixty-eight percent of the successful applicants had a 4.0 GPA.

Bal, Kirk double up on gold at FINA World Cup
The 2008 FINA Swimming World Cup kicked off October 10-12 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. On the first of the seven-stop series, National Teamers Randall Bal and Tara Kirk each picked up two gold medals.

USA Swimming Grand Prix Series returns
The top swimmers in the country will return to the pool for the 2008-2009 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series. For the second year in a row, swimmers will be awarded points for medals earned at the six meets. A $20,000 purse will be awarded to the swimmer with the most points at the conclusion of the series.

Fundraiser for coach Michael Lohberg
The Coral Springs Swim Club will host a “3K Family Fun Run, Walk, Stroll” Nov. 16 at the Coral Springs Aquatic Center. The event will raise money for coach Michael Lohberg’s family, to help defray the cost of medical bills incurred by Lohberg’s battle with Aplastic Anemia.

Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones, in association with aloft Philadelphia Airport hotel, will host a fundraising event on October 17 to raise money and bring awareness to the Salvation Army's Ray & Joan Kroc Center Aquatic Program.

Popovich named USOC Athlete of the Month
The U.S. Olympic Committee announced Friday that Paralympic swimmer Erin Popovich has been named its September Athlete of the Month for her accomplishments at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.

On the fourth day of competition, Longhorn Aquatics teammates Nick Thoman (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Hayley McGregory (Houston, Texas) closed in on the world records in the 100m backstroke at the 2008 U.S Open. USA Swimming's Ira Klein accepts coaching position
USA Swimming’s Field Services Director Ira Klein has accepted a position as head coach of the Sarasota YMCA Sharks in Sarasota, Fla. He will continue his duties at USA Swimming through the Speedo Junior Championships, Aug. 4-8, before starting his new responsibilities with the Sarasota-based club in mid-to-late August.

U.S. Open psych sheet now available
The psych sheet for the 2008 U.S. Open is now posted. The U.S. Open will be held from July 29 – August 2 in Minneapolis, Minn., at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. The 2008 Speedo Junior National Championships will be held in the same venue the following week, from Aug., 4-8.

USADA announced the launch of its “My Victory” campaign geared towards promoting the ideals of competing substance-free in athletics. Michael Phelps, Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin have joined nine other athletes in this effort as athlete ambassadors of the program.

An American record fell Sunday evening on the final night of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming when Dara Torres (Los Angeles, Calif.) lowered her own mark in the 50m freestyle. Torres qualified in her second individual event with the win in front of a crowd of 7,723 at the Qwest Center Omaha with a time of 24.25.

Phelps, Peirsol set world records on sixth night of Trials
One world record was broken and another tied Friday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming. First, Aaron Peirsol of Longhorn Aquatics tied the world record in the men’s 200m back, turning in a time of 1:54.32. Then Michael Phelps of Club Wolverine broke his own world record in the men’s 200m IM in 1:54.80.

Spann pulls off shocker at Trials
In what might turn out to be the biggest upset of the meet, Scott Spann won the men’s 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:09.97 Thursday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, defeating American record-holder and Longhorn Aquatics teammate Brendan Hansen in the process.

Two more wins, two American records for Hoff on fourth day of Trials
Katie Hoff of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club won two more events and set two American records Wednesday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, finishing first in the women’s 200m free (1:55.88) and 200m IM (2:09.71). Club Wolverine’s Michael Phelps also brought home a win in the 200m butterfly with a U.S. Open record of 1:52.20.

Coughlin, Peirsol set world records on Day 3 of Trials
Two world records and a U.S. Open record fell Tuesday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming. Natalie Coughlin of California Aquatics and Aaron Peirsol of Longhorn Aquatics treated the crowd of 12,559 at the Qwest Center Omaha to back-to-back world records in the women’s and men’s 100m back, turning in times of 58.97 and 52.89, respectively.

Hoff wins second event on Day 2 of Trials
North Baltimore Aquatic Club’s Katie Hoff won her second event of the meet Monday at 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team in the women’s 400m freestyle. The University of Tennessee’s Christine Magnuson and Longhorn Aquatics’ Brendan Hansen also qualified for the Olympic Team, winning the women’s 100m butterfly and men’s 100m breaststroke, respectively.

Phelps, Hoff set world records on first night of Trials
Michael Phelps of Club Wolverine and Katie Hoff of North Baltimore Aquatic Club set world records in the men’s and women’s 400m IM Sunday night at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming. The American and U.S. Open record in the men’s 400m freestyle also fell at the hands of Trojan Swim Club’s Larsen Jensen, and all three swimmers punched their tickets to Beijing by qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team.
